The CD drive on it doesn't work so I need usb sticks to work. Plus depending on what distro you go with, with a lot of tinkering and playing whatever I install will only last a couple of days so I need to use live USBs so I can play around a lot and mess stuff up. Macs up through the Powerbook G4 1.33 GHz, and at least some desktops up to and including the same vintage, and maybe a few later pre-Intel PPC Macs (not sure why not all the pre-Intel PPC Macs), will boot SOME USB drives from USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports/drives into OS 10.4.x (at least 10.4.6 and above-I didn't try earlier versions)-NOT OS 10.3.I selected to use the Classic GNOME shell instead of Unity. I ran Ubuntu 12.04 LTS PPC until the hard drive died. I also have an old 15" G4 PowerBook - built like a tank. The Intel Macs it is not a problem to install but the old PowerPC chip is another story. Hi Lance.lauren09, how's it going? As far as I know, Peppermint has never been ported to PowerPC Macs. Furthermore, I wouldn’t run linux on a G4, even a 1.67ghz one that you have on phase change and processor overclocked like crazy. As it is many macs simply do not boot from usb, let alone usb sticks and the ones that do are a complete pain to set up.I actually want to boot Linux but since that is not working Im thinking some one might know on the Apple end. There are work arounds for this - not good ones but they are work arounds. A lot of packages won't work because they are also not ported for PowerPC. Getting the network card to work, the sound ect. There was quite a bit of fiddling around after though.
![]() Linux For G4 Usb Install Will OnlyIts not a problem but you do have to treat the old G4 as a bit of a geriatric. The current PowerPC version is 14.04 Trusty Tahr PPC. Silly stuff like having to use Synaptic instead of the "Ubuntu one Stop SuperStore" or what ever they call it. Firefox worked well enough though. Not having these available makes a Peppermint PPC redundant before its even started. Vmware vsphere 5 serial keygenThis is going to be supported for the foreseeable future too. Debian also have a PowerPC version. Lubuntu would be my first choice. The new one may be easier. I could never get Lubuntu 12.04 to install. That should be fun because they are rare as chicken's teeth. I now feel inspired to get a new HDD for my G4. The installation instructions are very detailed.
